EASTER ISLAND & PERU

BEGIN YOUR ADVENTURE on remote Easter Island, where hundreds of Moai, tight-lipped basalt statues stand as silent guards to a mysterious past. With RICHARD BURGER, Professor of Anthropology, and LUCY SALAZAR, Lecturer of Anthropology, you'll explore tantalizing questions: How did an early seafaring people find this remote speck in the Pacific? Why did they erect the statues and what happened to the island's ancient inhabitants? Journey to Lima and then to Cusco and the Urubamba Valley. Ascend the Andes Mountains by train to the enchanting and fabled site of the "lost city" Machu Picchu, rediscovered by Hiram Bingham. Here explore clues uncovered by modern research which may reveal the reasons for Machu Picchu's construction, the activities that took place there and its subsequent abandonment. In Cusco, visit the new UNSAAC-Yale Center where the artifacts excavated by Hiram Bingham from between 1911 to 1916 are housed.

These small, expedition river vessels evoke the 19th century's great age of discovery while providing 21st-century comforts. This custom-designed itinerary also includes two nights in historic Lima, Peru. Cruise into one of the most exotic natural realms and our planet's largest rainforest ecosystem, where the number of butterfly species climbs into the thousands, and other species have yet to be classified or even discovered.
