Yale Alumni Service Corps article from Yale Daily News

Interesting article about the Alumni Service Corps.  Quotes from Yalies of the 80's including Tim Harkness are included:

Yale alumni service expands

Based on the success of its first domestic service trip last year to West Virginia to help high school students from underserved areas in their college search, Yale Alumni Service Corps (YASC) is now in the process of expanding its program in the United States.
YASC — which started as a service opportunity for alumni, families and friends in 2008 — has organized mission trips to international locations including Nicaragua, Ghana, China, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Alumni and student volunteers engage in projects such as teaching local women about domestic violence and self-defense and bringing medical equipment to treat cervical cancer and kidney failure. The service trips not only allow alumni and undergraduates to develop relationships with each country’s local population, but also with one another. Professions of alumni volunteers include movie producers, judges, educators and business experts. Now, YASC is turning its eye toward programs within America.
Last year, YASC collaborated with College Summit, an organization founded by Yale-Jefferson Public Service Award winner J.B. Schramm ’86 that works with high school students from underserved areas to mentor them in their college search and application process. The trip sold out within 24 hours of opening registration.
“We hadn’t been able to find a good ground partner in the U.S. until we partnered with College Summit. It was an extremely popular and successful trip, and we are expanding this year to go back to West Virginia and add California and potentially New Haven for 2014,” said Constance Spencer, chair of YASC and the producer and leader of several YASC programs.

Yale Alumni Social Media Summit | January 25, 2014

On January 25, 100 members of the Yale alumni community got together to discuss social media -- how it could be used to drive alumni engagement and facilitate connections between and among alumni and alumni groups.  Our MC for the day was the Class of '87's Michael Morand.  Tim Harkness was one of the speakers and other classmates -- Margie Whiteleather and Kather Edersheim -- were there, too.

Above is a summary and below is a video of the keynote discussion.

Socioeconomic Class

There's been a lot of discussion about class at Yale.  Socio-economic class.  It is factored into admissions -- just check out the recent articles about it the Yale Alumni Magazine.

Now, it's being discussed on campus and via tumblr: Class at Yale.  What do you think?

You can read more about the tumblr, here.

Here's a recent YDN piece on the issue:

New group to promote socioeconomic discussion

The discussion around socioeconomic class at Yale appears to be picking up steam.
Last night, Yale’s Peer Liaisons — upperclassmen who help connect first-year students to cultural houses and other communities within Yale — hosted a dinner-discussion at the Afro-American Cultural Center centered on socioeconomic class.
The event came over a month after the PLs launched a Tumblr website called “Class at Yale,” which has published nearly 100 anonymous submissions describing students’ experiences with socioeconomic class at the University.
This semester, David Truong ’14 is also spearheading the creation of a new student organization, called the Undergraduate First-Generation Low-Income Partnership, or U-FLIP. The group will center on discussions of socioeconomic class and the unique challenges present for students from low-income backgrounds, though students of all backgrounds are welcome.

Feb Club Emeritus

Feb Club Emeritus, the creation of the Yale Class of 1987, has launched its 7th year.  It's been a great start, so far, with parties both large and small connecting Yalies around the globe.

A new twist this year is the Virtual Feb Club.  On February 28, Yalies should get together with their friends for coffee, lunch, dinner, drinks, whatever works, really.  Take a picture of your event and post it to twitter, Facebook, Instagram -- and then use the #febclub and #yalealumni tags.  That's it.  A bunch of micro-Feb Clubs will be joined up to make one big Feb Club.

Hope you join in.  Even if you don't post a picture, call a roommate, a friend or teammate or castmate.  Reconnect.  You'll be glad that you did.

The Quiet Ones (2014) - Official Trailer [HD]

Check out the latest trailer to a movie by John Pogue.

Here's a synopsis from www.horrortalk.com:

On April 25th, 2014, The Quiet Ones opens in theaters nationwide. Based on actual events, the film stars Sam Claflin, Jared Harris, Erin Richards, Rory Fleck-Byrne, and Olivia Cooke and was directed by John Pogue.

Synopsis:
A university student (Sam Claflin of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) and some classmates are recruited to carry out a private experiment -- to create a poltergeist. Their subject: an alluring, but dangerously disturbed young woman (Olivia Cooke of Bates Motel). Their quest: to explore the dark energy that her damaged psyche might manifest. As the experiment unravels along with their sanity, the rogue PHD students, led by their determined professor (Jared Harris of Mad Men), are soon confronted with a terrifying reality: they have triggered an unspeakable force with a power beyond all explanation. Inspired by true events, The Quiet Ones is directed by John Pogue from a screenplay by Craig Rosenberg and Oren Moverman and John Pogue, and based on a screenplay by Tom de Ville.

While I no longer find any claim of "based on actual events" easy to believe, I must admit I do like the trailer. That coupled with how much I dig Olivia Cooke's performance in Bates Motel makes me more than just pretty interested in seeing this.
